Tips for Math Multiple Choice Questions

Why are multiple-choice questions tricky?

As a former teacher, many students stumble to answer multiple-choice questions. Multiple choice questions provide students with four different possible answers. From a student's perspective, these choices may seem very helpful toward answering the question. However, many students fail to identify the steps they need to answer the question. At KTS learning, we help students develop strategic skills to answer multiple-choice questions.

KTS learning tips for answering multiple-choice questions:

1st- Read the question and paraphrase it in your own words.

2nd - Ask yourself what is the problem asking me to find?

3rd- Identify the first step you need to do to solve the problem?

Let's take a look at a 6th-grade algebra problem below :

What is the value of X?

3x+12=27

A) 10 B) 5 C) 8 D)2

Step 1: In this problem, we need to solve for X.

Step 2: How can we solve for X?

Step 3: To solve for X, we need to get 3x by itself.

Step 4: To get 3x by itself, we need to identify a strategy to move the 12 to the opposite side. We need to do the inverse of addition which is subtraction. Let's subtract 12 from both sides.

Step 5: This leaves us with 3x = 15

Step 6: Now we have 3x. How can we get X by itself?

Step 7: To find X, we divide both sides by three.

X is equal to 5.
