The simplest math technique that every student should use.

Students struggle with multiplication. There are different approaches to solving these problems, and students should choose the one that feels easiest for them. This article explains the box model method, which is a strategy that your child will probably find interesting and want to use later on.

Method 1: Box Model

The box model helps students break down numbers into smaller parts, making it easier to understand. Many students find regrouping stressful and time-consuming, but the box model simplifies the process. It's especially helpful for children looking to solve multiplication problems with fewer steps.

Let's use the box model to solve 4 x 355.

Step 1: Create a square shape. Since 355 has 3 digits, we'll need 3 boxes.

Step 2: Let’s label the parts of the box.
Put numbers outside the box. The number 4 goes on the left side. Break down the bigger number, 355, into 3 separate numbers: 3 hundreds, 5 tens, and 5 ones. Students find this way of looking at numbers easier to understand and use. It's one of our recommended math strategies for parents.

Step 3: Let’s multiply

Multiply each number by 4:
300 x 4 = 1,200
50 x 4 = 200
5 x 4 = 20

Step 4: Let’s add!

Add up all the numbers in the box.

It's a fun trick to help your child by having them put plus signs between each box.
